RLT and Plaid Cymru Demands A Full Public Inquiry

Welsh Gov. Inquiry Cover Up: RLT and Plaid Cymru Demands A Full Public Inquiry

21st of January, 2013.

The Welsh Government’s independent inquiry into the Robbie Powell case, was tampered with by Welsh First Minister, Carwyn Jones.

Robbie’s Law Trust and leader of the Plaid Cymru party, Leanne Wood AM, now demand a full public inquiry.

In June 2012, four months after it was received by the Welsh government, the report was released to the public. First Minister Carwyn Jones, concealed 18 important parts of this independent inquiry.

Remarkably, these redacted parts of the document, were able to be recovered by Robbie’s father, Will Powell, when he downloaded the file in a certain way.

The 18 redactions were critical parts of the inquiry, that have previously been reported on before.  Some examples:

  • ”On the 30th of April 2004, the jury returned a verdict of ”death by natural causes, and neglect contributed to the cause of death”
  • ”The CPS decided that it was no longer in the public interest to prosecute the doctors because of the passage of time, and because of their earlier decisions not to prosecute”

The ITV documentary about the case ‘Wales This Week’ featured Michael Powers QC, expert in Coroner’s Law and clinical negligence.  He said ”There can be no reason for the redactions of that factual account of the inquiry.”

Will Powell wrote to Carwyn Jones and asked, ”Under what part of the Data Protection Act had he made the redactions?” Jones admitted to removing parts, and said that he did so ”lawfully”.

Robbie’s Law Trust and Michael Powers QC, believe that the redactions have destroyed the real value of having an independent inquiry, because it’s shown to not be independent any more.

On her blog, Leanne Wood AM, leader of the Plaid Cymru party in Wales, has called for the Carwyn Jones to meet with the Prime Minister, to discuss the possibility of a full public inquiry into Robbie’s death.

After this serious miscarriage of justice by the Welsh government, Robbie’s Law Trust and Leanne Wood AM, now demand a full, independent public inquiry.

This final, honest and transparent public inquiry, must go into the depths of corruption and mishandling of the 23 year case.

A proper public inquiry, would end 23 years of finger-pointing by judicial, policing, government and medical authorities – with no real responsibility taken by anybody.

Robbie Powell will always be remembered, and may he rest in peace.

The European Court of Human Rights ruled on 4th May, 2000 that ”As the law stands now, however, doctors have no duty to give parents of a child who died as a result of their negligence, a truthful account of the circumstances of death, nor even to refrain from deliberately falsifying records”.

This outrageous loophole in the law, needs to be changed.  Please sign the petition for a ‘Duty of Candour’. This enshrines openness and honesty in healthcare as a statutory law.
